Basketball: Team Nigeria Beats Team USA in Olympic Pre Games
Written by Christopher Odiley on 12th Jul 2021
For the first time in the Basketball game’s history, an African team beats Team USA in a major basketball game’s encounter. As a Nigerian team of relatively young players beats well-oiled and experienced, all-star NBA players led by legendary Kevin Durant.
The game got to an interesting start as Gabe Nnamdi, who plays for the Miami Heat, led Nigeria with 21 points. Caleb Agada scored 17 points, Ike Nwamu added 13 and Nigeria outscored the U.S. 60-30 from 3-point range. Team USA eventually lost the game 90-87. By the victory, Nigeria has re-written the previous trends of continuous losses to the USA.

The performance of the young Nigerian basketball team left many including NBA players and coaches giving the Nigerian team much deserved praise. “I thought that the Nigerian team played very physically, did a great job in that regard, and knocked down a lot of 3s,” U.S. coach Gregg Popovich said. “Give them credit.”
By and large, this pre-Olympic encounter has changed the conception that team USA is always invincible when it comes to the game of basketball. Meanwhile, the Nigerian team can hold their head up high with the confidence that they can contend for the Gold at the Olympics and any other international basketball tournaments in the future.
