Marcus is a shining amour in South African Basketball

Marcus Mokwena is a rare gem in the South African basketball league. The story of Marcus reveals the determination of a young man, who grew up knowing and deciding which path he wanted to follow . Hence at the very early age from his Elementary (Primary School) days has got highly and actively involved in Cricket and Rugby, his passion for these hard spots developed immensely from then on.

Marcus took time out to chill with Christopher Odiley, host of “Voice of The Underground” in an exclusive interview where he painted a full picture of the BNL (Basketball National League) and the Johannesburg Basketball League (JBL). His knowledge of the game is exceptional both professionally in the court and off the court. Marcus’ vision for the entire leagues of basketball in South Africa is one that is full of optimum energy.

Marcus who was officially called up into the BNL after completing his University Degree at the Vaal University where he studied under a sports bursary program of the University, has since become a basketball sensation in the entire leagues both during provincial tournaments and national tournaments.

This is how Marcus explained his professional Basketball journey to date:

“In 2014  mid year, I got a call up to play in the Basketball National League South Africa, where I played for the Mpumalanga  Rhinos ” 

Since then I have played for several teams including
Soweto Panthers who are the current league champions, Egoli Magic and MBB (Men Behaving Badly).”

Marcus, has had a wonderful career so far and the sky seem to be no limit. At just 26, he has represented South Africa in various multinational tournaments and has since among his laurels of souvenirs won the below awards:

2014 Inter Provincial Tournament Bronze Medalist 
2015 University Sports South Africa champions 
2015 Gauteng University Basketball League  champion 
2015  Ashraf Tournament Champion 
Five time Basketball National League MVP 
2018 Soweto league’s league MVP 
2018 Basketball National league All-Star Player 
2018 e’Swatini invitational International Basketball Tournament All-Star Player

Marcus who is a current champion under the Soweto Panthers team is also the BNL’s Best rebounder and Best defensive player. This is a testament to his current appointment as a Junior Basketball Coach at St Davids College.
